Dizionario Maltese - Italiano - Inglese
Dizionario Maltese‑Italiano‑Inglese — a trilingual Maltese–Italian–English dictionary compiled by Giovanni Battista Falzon
The dictionary was first published in the late 19th century — the main editions date from 1882–1884
Historical significance: Falzon’s “Dizionario Maltese-Italiano-Inglese” represents one of the earliest serious attempts to document the Maltese language alongside both Italian and English. At a time when Maltese was emerging from largely oral tradition — and as Malta was navigating Italian/English influence — this dictionary helped codify Maltese vocabulary and served as a bridge for Maltese speakers learning Italian or English
Content & scope: Beyond basic vocabulary, the dictionary includes specialized nomenclature — botany, ichthyology (fish names), ornithology (birds), seafaring and maritime vocabulary — as well as phrases, idioms, and proverbs. There’s also a short grammar of Maltese at the beginning, an important feature for a time when Maltese had limited standardized grammar resources
